The Mayor has removed and cancelled dozens of safety improvement projects. He’s now decided to remove the raised crosswalk on Lower Westheimer

In May of 2023, the Montrose TIRZ installed a raised crosswalk at Westheimer and Crocker. It was one of 3 safety improvement projects prioritized by District C Councilmember Abbie Kamin for the community.

On January 8th, 2016 Alex Hill was crossing Westheimer a block away when a driver ran through the red light and killed him.

On April 19th, 2023 Joseph McMullin was walking on the sidewalk when a driver speeding on Westheimer near Montrose lost control and killed him.

The Lower Westheimer Corridor Study shows how dangerous it is and what fixes are needed. But in July of 2021, this project was stalled when the city failed to include it in the Capital Improvement Plan.

Mayor Whitmire then ignored years of study and pubic engagement to announce in March of 2024 his plan to drastically scale back the scope of the project.

On May 7th, 2024, at the groundbreaking, he told us “METRO needs to listen to the residents; the city needs to listen to the residents".

But he doesn’t listen. The Mayor now plans to remove the raised crosswalk.

Write the Mayor, Councilmember Abbie Kamin and Metro to let them know the community refuses to let another safety improvement project be destroyed.
