Washington Ave.

Washington Ave. is one of Houston’s oldest corridors but suffers from neglect. Houston is not a city known for urban planning.

The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) has conducted a detailed study, with multiple rounds of engagement, to find out what the community values. As we see over and over, people want “a thriving, sustainable, livable Washington Corridor”.

The study shows that it’s used more as a local connector by people than a commuter corridor for drivers.

Yet in March of 2025, the Mayor fast tracked a project to simply repave it. No engagement, no discussion, no transparency. Left in the lurch were sidewalks which are unusable for blocks and no safe way to cross the street.

We’ve been here before: Houston Ave, Austin St, Shepherd-Durham, Telephone Road, Montrose Blvd, W. Alabama - it’s a long list of projects hijacked by the Mayor to remove safety improvements.

But the community is demanding safety improvements. Super Neighborhood 22’s Transportation Committee sent a letter to Metro, District H and District C to specify what the community needs.

H-GAC did a survey to identify short term improvements.

We put together this factsheet which shows the need for safety improvements now, not later.

  • Washington Ave. is on the High Injury Network

  • It’s a long way between signalized crossings

  • The corridor is Metro’s 6th busiest bus route but many bus stops lack safe crossings

  • The community consistently says walking, biking and public transit must be prioritized
