Safe Neighborhood Streets
In Texas, the default (prima facie) speed limit in our neighborhoods is 30 mph. Cities can only change it with expensive and time consuming measures like a traffic study, enforcement investigation or signage.
For years, legislation has been submitted to change state law. And for years, it’s failed to pass.
During his campaign, candidate John Whitmire, now Mayor, committed to lowering Houston’s residential speed limit.
The residential speed limit matters because every 5 mph makes a big difference whether you are killed or seriously injured when hit by a driver:
